Online ad placement report

Posted by Sarah Burns on 08 Dec 2009

A recently published Mintel Report confirms that consumers are more likely to pay attention to ads placed on search engines and price comparison sites than social networks and email.

54% of web users pay attention to ads on search engines and 43% on price comparison sites, compared with 28% on social networks and 22% on email.

The report also identified key gender and age differences, with women more likely to see ads on social networking sites and men when consuming on-demand video content.

Not surprisingly, there was a strong bias towards young people paying attention to ads on social media sites - 48% of 16 to 24 year olds, compared with just over 16% of over 55 year-olds.

Winter Olympics 2014 logo unveiled

Thoughts in the office are divided on the latest Olympic logo. Russia's first Winter Games are being held in Sochi in 2014.

There is some surprise that it feels more akin to the Soviet era than modern Russia, with its solidness that is consistent with Eastern bloc imagery.

While some of us like the symmetry of the lettering, others feel it is a rather clumsy and annoying.

The inclusion of the URL is an important addition to the logo for two reasons, first it informs people that the event will be held in Russia and secondly it helps to drive traffic to the site and offer viewers a digital Olympic experience.

Mobile app for buying over-the-counter medicines

Posted by Sophi Wood on 24 Nov 2009

An iPhone application that is currently being developed by GSK would enable consumers to find out information on a range of GSK’s medicines, along with location information for pharmacies selling the products and hospitals for emergencies.

If approved, this would be the first application of this type available and in time is likely to offer incentives and offers to encourage usage.

Where GSK lead, will others follow?

Using Twitter as a search tool

Posted by Sarah Burns on 24 Nov 2009

Last week Twitter changed its strapline from ‘What are you doing?’ to ‘What’s happening?’ altering its emphasis from being a place for personal broadcasting to being a news and information site.

It has been increasingly the case that people are using Twitter for real-time information on news and events as well as sharing thoughts and links.

Along with this change, Twitter has also announced that they will be offering commercial tools from the end of the year. This will help brands to make money from the platform.

Using the Wii to Learn CPR

Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham will be examining how the motion-controlled Nintendo Wii remote can be used as part of a PC software based program to help teach CPR. The American Heart Association has already pledged $50,000 to help fund this promising student program. Though nothing has been said by Nintendo in regards to the idea, it's hoped that they'll pick it up as an official application.

mapmyride.com

MapMyRide.com is a community web site for road cyclists and mountain bikers who want to stay healthy, lose weight or train more effectively.

The awesome thing about this site is the ability to create a route on a map and to be able to see instantly the distance and even nicer the elevation profile of the ride; pretty frightening if you happen to live on Exmoor!

Writing for the web

Posted by Sarah Burns on 14 Jul 2009

When producing a piece of print material the services of a professional copywriter are more often or not utilised, ensuring that the message produced is appropriate for the audience, conveys the key messages and is suitable for the print medium. But all too often with websites and digital marketing the same principle is not applied and content is simply lifted from print material.

Writing for the web is an art of its own. People read websites differently to printed material, therefore content should be prepared with this in mind. To read more on the subject click here
